INSIDE THE BOOK

About this book

Animation in modern games is more than just moving sprites - it’s about creating believable, dynamic characters and environments. This book dives deep into advanced animation programming, covering skinned rigs, inverse kinematics, ragdoll physics, and procedural animation systems. With practical examples and detailed explanations, it equips developers with the tools to implement complex animation systems that enhance realism and interactivity. Ideal for intermediate to advanced programmers, it bridges the gap between basic animation and cutting-edge techniques used in professional game studios.

Good, but not for absolute beginners

Strong content, uneven pacing. I would still recommend it.

I was looking for something that would bridge the gap between tutorials and proper reference material, and this does that well. There is a section near the end that ties several earlier ideas together in a way I had not seen before. The code samples assume a particular environment, which took a bit of fiddling to get running properly. Some terminology is introduced without much ceremony; I had to look a few things up along the way. Four stars, and I suspect a second edition could easily push it to five.

Excellent from start to finish

Finally, a book that treats game development with the care it deserves.

I have been working with game development for a few years now and I still found plenty here that was new to me. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. It is denser than the page count suggests, and I found myself slowing down around the middle. Worth the money and the reading time, without hesitation.

A genuine pleasure to read

Worth every page. I have already recommended it to two colleagues.

I read this over a couple of weekends alongside a small side project, which turned out to be the ideal way to approach it. I appreciated the honesty about what the book does not cover — it saved me from expecting things that were not there. The exercises at the end of each chapter are worth doing — they caught a few misconceptions I did not know I had. I have already recommended it to two colleagues and will recommend it to more.
